Lawyers’ Conference Urges Good Conscience and Academic Freedom at Jadavpur University

Jadavpur University occupies a distinguished place in the intellectual and educational history of Bengal. Established on 24 December 1955 under the Jadavpur University Act, 1955, it emerged from the National Council of Education, Bengal, founded in 1906 with the larger objective of achieving self-reliance through sound education, technical learning, and an awareness of the social, cultural, political and economic realities of Bengal, India and the wider world. That original spirit of national education must not be allowed to disappear.
The All-Bengal Lawyers’ Conference expresses its deep concern over the continuing politicisation of the university environment and over allegations that sections of the campus have increasingly become centres of ideological confrontation. Differences of political opinion are legitimate in a university; intimidation, violence, destruction of public property, communal or religious vilification and the suppression of contrary views are not. The reported midnight confrontation of 19–20 August 2026, injuries to students, and damage to the historic university emblem associated with Nandalal Bose are matters requiring serious institutional attention.
The Conference is equally concerned by the reported controversy surrounding anti-India political graffiti and its repeated removal and repainting. University premises cannot become a permanent battleground between competing political organisations. Academic institutions must remain places where disagreement is settled through reason, scholarship and lawful democratic processes.
The Conference further deplores the use of expressions such as “Gerua Gundami” in public discourse by Anandabazar Patrika when such terminology may be understood as denigrating the sacred saffron colour, which has profound spiritual and civilisational associations in Indian tradition. Criticism of political conduct should be directed at individuals or organisations and should not unnecessarily become an affront to religious or cultural sentiment.
The All-Bengal Lawyers’ Conference therefore calls upon the intelligentsia, teachers, students and authorities of West Bengal to restore intellectual discipline, academic freedom and mutual respect in educational institutions. Political ideology must never be permitted to displace scholarship, nor should hostility towards Indian civilisational traditions be allowed to become a substitute for serious academic inquiry. Jadavpur University deserves an atmosphere of good conscience, free thought, lawful conduct and excellence in education and research.
যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় নিয়ে অল-বেঙ্গল ল’য়ার্স কনফারেন্সের বিবৃতি
যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় বাংলার বৌদ্ধিক ও শিক্ষাগত ইতিহাসে একটি বিশিষ্ট স্থান অধিকার করে আছে। ১৯৫৫ সালের ২৪ ডিসেম্বর Jadavpur University Act, 1955-এর অধীনে প্রতিষ্ঠিত এই বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শিকড় ১৯০৬ সালে প্রতিষ্ঠিত National Council of Education, Bengal-এর মধ্যে নিহিত। সেই জাতীয় শিক্ষাচিন্তার মূল লক্ষ্য ছিল উৎকৃষ্ট জ্ঞান, কারিগরি শিক্ষা এবং বাংলা, ভারত ও বিশ্বের সামাজিক, সাংস্কৃতিক, রাজনৈতিক ও অর্থনৈতিক বাস্তবতা সম্পর্কে সচেতনতার মাধ্যমে যুবসমাজকে সক্ষম করে আত্মনির্ভরতা অর্জন। সেই মূল চেতনাকে কোনোভাবেই বিস্মৃত হতে দেওয়া উচিত নয়।
অল-বেঙ্গল ল’য়ার্স কনফারেন্স যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষাঙ্গনে ক্রমবর্ধমান রাজনৈতিকীকরণ এবং মতাদর্শগত সংঘাতের পরিবেশ নিয়ে গভীর উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করছে। বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে রাজনৈতিক মতপার্থক্য থাকা স্বাভাবিক এবং গণতান্ত্রিক সমাজে তা বৈধ; কিন্তু ভয় প্রদর্শন, হিংসা, সরকারি বা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের সম্পত্তি নষ্ট করা, ধর্মীয় বা সাংস্কৃতিক অবমাননা এবং ভিন্নমতকে দমন করার কোনো স্থান শিক্ষাঙ্গনে থাকতে পারে না। ১৯–২০ আগস্টের মধ্যরাত্রির সংঘর্ষ, ছাত্রদের আহত হওয়া এবং নন্দলাল বসুর সঙ্গে ঐতিহাসিকভাবে যুক্ত বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রতীকচিহ্ন ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হওয়ার ঘটনাগুলি যথেষ্ট গুরুত্বের সঙ্গে বিবেচনা করা প্রয়োজন।
রাজনৈতিক দেওয়াল লিখনকে কেন্দ্র করে বারবার উত্তেজনা ও সংঘাতের ঘটনাতেও Conference উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করছে। বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় কোনো রাজনৈতিক সংঘর্ষের স্থায়ী ক্ষেত্র হতে পারে না। শিক্ষাঙ্গনে মতের বিরোধের নিষ্পত্তি হওয়া উচিত যুক্তি, গবেষণা, পারস্পরিক শ্রদ্ধা এবং আইনসম্মত গণতান্ত্রিক পদ্ধতির মাধ্যমে।
একই সঙ্গে সংবাদমাধ্যমে “গেরুয়া গুন্ডামি”-র মতো অভিব্যক্তির ব্যবহার নিয়েও Conference উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করছে। গেরুয়া রং ভারতীয় ঐতিহ্যে গভীর আধ্যাত্মিক ও সাংস্কৃতিক তাৎপর্য বহন করে। রাজনৈতিক আচরণের সমালোচনা ব্যক্তি বা সংগঠনের কর্মকাণ্ডকে কেন্দ্র করেই হওয়া উচিত; কোনো ধর্মীয় বা সাংস্কৃতিক প্রতীকের প্রতি অপ্রয়োজনীয় অবমাননাকর ভাষা ব্যবহার করা উচিত নয়।
অল-বেঙ্গল ল’য়ার্স কনফারেন্স পশ্চিমবঙ্গের শিক্ষক, ছাত্র, বুদ্ধিজীবী, শিক্ষাবিদ এবং প্রশাসনের কাছে শিক্ষাঙ্গনে বৌদ্ধিক শৃঙ্খলা, মতপ্রকাশের স্বাধীনতা, আইনানুগ আচরণ এবং পারস্পরিক সম্মান পুনঃপ্রতিষ্ঠার আহ্বান জানাচ্ছে। রাজনৈতিক মতাদর্শ কখনোই শিক্ষাকে ও গবেষণাকে প্রতিস্থাপন করতে পারে না। একইভাবে ভারতীয় সভ্যতা ও ঐতিহ্য সম্পর্কে সমালোচনামূলক অধ্যয়নের অধিকার যেমন থাকবে, তেমনি কোনো বিদ্বেষ বা অবমাননাকে একাডেমিক স্বাধীনতার নামে প্রতিষ্ঠা করা যাবে না। যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রয়োজন এমন একটি পরিবেশ, যেখানে শিক্ষা, গবেষণা, মুক্ত চিন্তা, যুক্তিবোধ, আইন এবং শুভবিবেক রাজনৈতিক সংঘাতের ঊর্ধ্বে স্থান পায়।
